What do you think when you think of lighting?

Often, when we talk with illuminators who are not designers, one speaks about design of the lighting as if it was an issue of an ancient or mystic art. This does not have to be like that.
In the most basic level, all the design can be expressed in a phrase: The design is take a decision.
When a designer of lighting proposes the design of lighting for a show, a theatrical production or a nightclub, he has to know that the light has a set of functions that use it of lighting and a selection of components to comply with those functions.

The first function of the light, and the most important, is precisely to provide the lighting. Though this can seem to be painfully obvious now, it can be easy to forget when one faces an enormous selection of accessories of lighting. A design of lighting that does not provide lighting is like a chair without seat, does not import it nice that is, continues being basically useless.
Another function is that the light serves to define the space. This is more evident in live shows or in a theatre, where the scene is illuminated and the audience is going to get dark. Finer, a designer of lighting can give the impression of two different places in the scene, at the same time, simply for the isolation in sectors separated by the light.
To use the light to define the space is useful also out of the scene. In a discotheque, for example, the dancing floor generally has a brilliant and coloring lighting, whereas other sectors are isolated separated by his own “islands” of light. In a delighted house, the horrifying exhibitions are illuminated by punctual lights, whereas the clients stroll around in the darkness

The lighting also can establish or improve a state of mind. Fort, white, lights of ceiling can suggest a place of serious work, or institutional state of mind. Brilliant, lights of colors create a festive environment, environment of holiday. Conditions of few lights, or the light in the not natural colors and of unusual directions they are used always to create a chilling effect.

The establishment of the humor state is often confused or difficult for a beginner designer.
